The main character of this book is a boy named Ponyboy Curtis. Some people also just calls him Pony. Pony is a small teenager around the age of 14-16. He has long light-brown that is always slicked back with a greasy substance and he has gray and greenish eyes. "I have light-brown, almost red hair and greenish-gray eyes." (P.1) Pony isn't the strongest but he has a good heart. He doesn't look like much but if you mess with him you better get ready to get a beat down from his brothers. Pony has two brothers that are older that him. One brother is named Sodapop, but most people call just call him Soda, and he is the middle kid. Pony's oldest brother was named Darry and he was a muscle attic. Pony's best friend was named Johnny and they were just like brothers. Pony had two other friends named Dally and Two-bit. They were all like one big family and they all cared about each other a lot.
Setting Analysis:
There are two different settings in this story. The setting of this story is a small town with a lot of action. The story doesn't say what state the town was in. The other setting in this story is a small abandoned church out in the country on Jay Mountain. Pony thought that the church was spooky and creepy. "We climbed in a back window. It was a small church, real old and spooky and spiderwebby. It gave me the creeps." (P.66) (Pony talks in first person)
Problem Analysis:
The main problem of this story is that a couple of Socs (Socials) come out of a mustang and pick a fight with Johnny and Pony. They try to fight because the Soc's Girlfriends left them because they got drunk and the girls sat by Johnny and Pony. Pony and Johnny talked to them for a while and Two-bit came also. It started to get late and the girls wanted to leave so the three boys walked them to their houses. On the way to the girls houses a mustang drove up to the girls and greasers and and told the girls to get in. Two-bit said maybe the girls don't want to go with you guys and the socials said that they had four more in the back seat. Than Two-bit said another thing. "Listen, greasers, we got four more of us in the back seat." "Then pity the backseat,'" Two-bit said to the sky." (P.45) They were about to fight but the girls said they don't want to see them fight so they just got in the car. Two-bit left to play Snooker (A pool game) and Pony was walking with Johnny to his house. When they got there Johnny's parents were fighting so they just went to the lot which is a greaser hangout. They were looking at the stars then they fell asleep. Pony woke up and went to his house and got in a lot of trouble from Darry. Darry yelled at him saying it's two o'clock in the morning and Soda tried to stand up for him but he got yelled at to. Pony yelled at Darry telling him to quit yelling at Soda but Darry pushed him to the floor and Pony got back up and darted out the door. He ran to the lot again and he woke up Johnny and told him that they were going to running away so they took off to the park. They were sitting on the monkey bars talking about if they should run away or not. While they were talking and they noticed that a mustang was circling the park and it was the same one from before. The mustang pulled up to the greasers and the socs came out and trashed talk the greasers. The greasers trashed talked back and they got in a fight. Their were a couple of socs on each greaser and Johnny was fist fighting and Pony was getting drowned. Pony passed out and found looked up and saw a soc dead on the ground. Johnny was sitting on the ground next to Pony with a blood knife in his hand. Pony asked what happend and johnny said that he killed the soc because he thought they were going to kill him. They took off to Dally's house and they asked Dally where they should go because they didn't want to get the electric chair. Dally told them to go to a church on Jay Mountain and stay their for a while.
Recommendation:
I would recommend this book because it shows how dangerous it could be back then if you were a greaser.I would recommend this book to anybody that is about 10+ and to anyone that likes close friend books.
